Laboratory-based measures indicate that individuals with FOG (PD+FOG) have greater balance deficits than those without FOG (PD-FOG). Whether such differences also can be detected using clinical balance tests has not been investigated. We sought to determine if balance and specific aspects of balance, measured using Balance Evaluation Systems Test (BESTest), differs between PD+FOG and PD-FOG. Furthermore, we aimed to determine if time-efficient clinical balance measures (i.e. Mini-BESTest, Berg Balance Scale (BBS)) could detect balance differences between PD+FOG and PD-FOG. METHODS: Balance of 78 individuals with PD, grouped as either PD+FOG (n=32) or PD-FOG (n=46), was measured using the BESTest, Mini-BESTest, and BBS. Between-groups comparisons were conducted for these measures and for the six sections of the BESTest using analysis of covariance. A PD composite score was used as a covariate. RESULTS: Controlling for motor sign severity, PD duration, and age, PD+FOG had worse balance than PD-FOG when measured using the BESTest (p=0.008, F=7.35) and Mini-BESTest (p=0.002, F=10.37), but not the BBS (p=0.27, F=1.26). BESTest section differences were noted between PD+FOG and PD-FOG for reactive postural responses (p<0.001, F=14.42) and stability in gait (p=0.003, F=9.18). CONCLUSIONS: The BESTest and Mini-BESTest, which specifically assessed reactive postural responses and stability in gait, were more likely than the BBS to detect differences in balance between PD+FOG and PD-FOG.     Nonlinear evolution of step meander during growth of a vicinal surface with no desorption

    Step meandering due to a deterministic morphological instability on vicinal surfaces during growth is studied. We investigate nonlinear dynamics of a step model with asymmetric step kinetics, terrace and line diffusion, by means of a multiscale analysis. We give the detailed derivation of the highly nonlinear evolution equation on which a brief account has been given [Pierre-Louis et.al. PRL(98)]. Decomposing the model into driving and relaxational contributions, we give a profound explanation to the origin of the unusual divergent scaling of step meander ~ 1/F^{1/2} (where F is the incoming atom flux). A careful numerical analysis indicates that a cellular structure arises where plateaus form, as opposed to spike-like structures reported erroneously in Ref. [Pierre-Louis et.al. PRL(98)]. As a robust feature, the amplitude of these cells scales as t^{1/2}, regardless of the strength of the Ehrlich-Schwoebel effect, or the presence of line diffusion. A simple ansatz allows to describe analytically the asymptotic regime quantitatively. We show also how sub-dominant terms from multiscale analysis account for the loss of up-down symmetry of the cellular structure.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures; (Submitted to EPJ B

    [excerpt] Accidentally introduced into New Jersey about 1925, the European pine sawfly, Neodiprion sertifer (Geoffroy), now inhabits most of the Northeastern and North Central States and Ontario, Canada. Red pine, Pinus resinosa Aiton, and most other native and exotic pines within its range are susceptible to attack. Few attack records are available for ponderosa pine, P. ponderosa Douglas ex Lawson, because this pine is uncommon in eastern North America. Soraci (1939) ob- served egg clusters and larval feeding on planted red and ponderosa pine in New Jersey; Benjamin et al. (1955) found egg clusters on ponderosa pine in Illinois and recorded more intensive attacks on red pines nearby. However, quantitative data on the relative susceptibility of ponderosa pine to sawfly attack have never been reported

Scotch pine, Pinus sylvestris L., and red pine, P. resinom Ait., are its principal hosts. During recent behavioral studies of this sawfly in Michigan, spatial distribution patterns were determined in order to rapidly survey population levels in young pine plantations (Wilson and Gerrard, 1971).     Stenonemobius gracilis is recorded for the first time from the Maltese Islands on the basis of two specimens taken at light in 1993 at Mellieħa Bay, and subsequent records of specimens, collected between 1999 and 2004, from various sites located on the ‘northwest’ region of Malta and one site on Gozo. It is suggested that this species may well have been overlooked previously due to its diminutive size and nocturnal habits.peer-reviewe

    The Capability of Some Butterflies as Carriers of Common Milkweed Pollen

    The common milkweed, Asclepias syriaca L., is remarkably adapted for cross pollination by insects. Its pollen sacs (pollinia) are often found attached to the appendages of bees, wasps, butterflies, and other insects that visit milkweed for its nectar (Judd, 1955; Matheson, 1951 ; Muller, 1883). In the summer of 1966 and 1967 I collected numerous pierid and nymphalid butterflies associated with milkweed plants in Michigan in order to examine them for their pollen-carrying capability. Species of butterflies collected were Colias interior Scudder, C. eurytheme Boisduval, Pieris rapae (L.). and Speyeria aphrodite (Fab.). These insects were taken while feeding on or flying near milkweed plants between 3 July and 22 July each year--the period when milkweed was in full bloom--in Crawford, Montmorency, and Oscoda Counties, Michigan
